Sifu Rick Fowler, an eighth degree black belt in American Kenpo Karate, trains Sifu Jim Dryburgh of PowerKenpo in the Russian martial art of Systema in a private seminar.
Systema ("The System") is a Russian martial art. It is designed to be highly adaptive and practical, teaching students self-defense techniques through drills and sparring instead of set forms or techniques. It focuses mainly on controlling the six body levers (elbows, neck, knees, waist, ankles, and shoulders) through pressure point application, striking and weapon applications. Systema is employed by some Russian Spetsnaz (special forces) units, and was largely unknown outside of Russia until the end of the Cold War.
Systema borrows heavily from Aikido, Judo and Jiu-Jitsu, focusing on using an opponent's force against them and using joint locks and throws to disable or disarm an attacker.
Many PowerKenpo instructors have trained in Systema under Vladimir Vasiliev, the world's leading expert on this highly adaptive and elegant variation on the traditional martial arts. PowerKenpo offers private lessons and group seminars in Systema under Sifu Rick Fowler in Irving, Texas.
