The Written Thesis in American Kenpo Karate
In order to be promoted to a black belt in American Kenpo Karate, PowerKenpo students must write a thesis summarizing their emotional, spiritual, analytical or philosophical connection to the martial arts. This statement, combined with the personal form, is the student's unique addition to the evolution of Kenpo as a martial art.
The requirements for the thesis are very broad. Talk with Sifu Jim Dryburgh prior to writing yours. Some thought starters could include:
- Summarize how American Kenpo Karate fits into your life on a daily basis
- Describe the emotional connection you have to the martial arts
- How does American Kenpo Karate make you feel?
- Describe your philosophical or spiritual connection to the martial arts
- What are the aspects of American Kenpo Karate that make particular sense to you?
- Describe how American Kenpo Karate has made a difference in your life
- How has your study of the martial arts transformed you emotionally, physically, spiritually?
- Analyze the principles of motion used in a specific form or set of techniques
- How do circular and linear movements, combined with the Kenpo Karate concepts, make a form or technique particularly effective?
There is no length requirement for the thesis, it must simply summarize your connection to the martial arts. If you need help, Sifu Jim Dryburgh can help you brainstorm topics, or discuss topics about which past students have written.
