The American Kenpo Karate White Belt

The white belt in American Kenpo Karate can be earned at PowerKenpo - a Martial Arts, Self-Defense and Karate school in Dallas, TX

The white belt is used in nearly all martial arts to signify that a student is a beginner. Some believe that the white belt signifies that the student's mind and body is a "tabula rasa" or blank slate upon which the forms, techniques and philosophies of the martial arts will be imprinted.

Centuries ago, students were said to have received only the white belt — and it gradually turned brown, gray then black with grime and dirt as the student progressed. Once the belt was "black" with age, the student supposedly had the required knowledge and expertise to teach others about the martial arts.

In American Kenpo Karate, the white belt is the first of ten different colors and signifies that a student is a beginner. As the student learns (and then demonstrates) specific forms and techniques, a yellow stripe is placed upon the belt to indicate that they have proven their abilities. Once all of the required stripes are earned, the student can test to receive their yellow belt.

If you are currently a white belt student at PowerKenpo, use this page to train for your yellow belt test. Once you have received all of the necessary stripes, you can apply for your test using the downloadable handouts on that page. Belt testing occurs the first week of every month.
