Foot Maneuvers: American Kenpo Karate
These basic foot maneuvers are required for promotion to your next belt. As you get better, your understanding of each should also improve.
Heel and Toe Rule
- Imagine a line from your opponent or target to you
- The toes of your front foot are on one side of the line
- The heel of your rear foot is on the other side
- If you are looking in a mirror, you should be able to see your rear foot
Bend your knees Relax keep the head over the hips and hands up!
Foot Maneuvers
1: Step-Drag (Forward / Reverse)
- Lead foot steps in the direction you want to go and drag the trailing foot
- Think small steps - big steps leave you vulnerable for a longer period of time
2: Push-Drag (Forward / Reverse)
- Push with the back foot, then drag the back foot
- When you push, the front foot is 'pushed' off the ground in the direction that you want to go
3: Drag-Step (Forward / Reverse)
- Trailing foot drags up to the lead foot
- Then step out with the lead foot
- Remember: Always keep your knees bent slightly
4: 90° Cover
- From neutral, rear foot steps forward
- Turn in the direction of your lead foot (a 90° turn)
5: 180° Cover
- From neutral, lead foot steps across the body
- Turn towards your rear foot (a 180° turn)
6: Jump Switch
- From right neutral, jump slightly off of the ground
- Switch your stance to left neutral as you land
- The same applies from left neutral, you will just be landing into the opposite stance.
