There are ten belts in the American Kenpo Karate belt system each of them a different color. Each belt is a visual indicator of a student's level of Kenpo knowledge and training and are awarded when the student's teacher feels that he or she has displayed a sufficient level of understanding to progress to the next belt. Once a student achieves the black belt, additional progress is indicated by a red stripe on the belt thus a fourth degree black belt has four red stripes on each end of their belt.
